We are a small Episcopal Church on the banks of the Rappahannock in Port Royal, Virginia. We acknowledge that we gather on the traditional land of the first people of Port Royal, the Nandtaughtacund, and we respect and honor with gratitude the land itself, the legacy of the ancestors, and the life of the Rappahannock Tribe. Our mission statement is to do God’s Will in all that we do.

Introduction

Mexican Folk Art

This song is unique for several reasons. First, it was associated with three generations of the Work family who were African-American teachers, musicians, and who motivated the Fisk Jubilee Singers from Fisk University to perform the songs. The Work family collected spirituals to save them from oblivion, a difficult task since many of the spirituals were never written down. They also published them into collections for later generations.
